Witch’s Studies

Even witch’s needs a place to learn their craft. Halloween paintings  don’t always have to be scary and this particular painting shares two of my favorite things: old books and witches. My favorite Halloween costume was always a witch: I dressed up like one every year and never tired of it. So I always wondered: where do witches learn to be a witch. This was before Harry Potter and Wicked; the witches I grew up with were on Saturday morning cartoons or the annual airings of the Wizard of Oz.

I always liked coming up with backstories for all these characters and asking questions like: do witches go to a magic boarding school or are they home-schooled; do they ride the bus or a broom; and do they take an final exam or just turn somebody into a frog? These were fun questions I liked to ask while creating fun stories in my head. Now I still ask those kinds of questions when creating fun pieces like this one.

DETAILS AND CARE OF PIECE:

Witch’s Studies is an 8″ x 10″ ceramic tile, framed in an antique gold frame of ornate wood, that features the tricks of the trade that every good witch needs: candlelight, black ink and a feather quill, an ancient book of spells and every witch’s favorite accessory: a black felt hat.

This piece is sealed with a high-grade, epoxy resin, with UV protection to protect against sunlight and fading. My name is signed on the lower right and is framed in a 1.25″ (3.81 cm) solid wood frame of a brushed silver and gold. The finished size is 11 3/4″ x 13 3/4″ (29.845 cm x 34.925 cm) and is ready-to-hang.
