ABOUT THE ART:
Sunflowers have always been my favorite flowers. My grandfather always grew them in his garden and as a little girl I was always fascinated at how a flower could grow that big. I also remember when I was in grade school art class my teacher had a print of Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” on her wall. From where I sat I could sit and stare at it every day. At age 8 I had no idea that the chaotic brush strokes, the bold colors, and the aged sunflowers in a vase meant anything; I just liked the flowers. And I now love the symbolism behind them, which is good luck and longevity.
The goal of painting a sunflower is to bring a little sunshine into our lives all year no matter the storms we may face, but I also painted this piece to pay homage to one of my favorite movies: Calendar Girls. Helen Mirren delivers a speech in the movie about sunflowers that blew me away the first time I heard it and now I watch that movie every time I paint another sunflower piece. I decided to include the speech here so that it can inspire you, as well, and maybe discover a love for these amazing flowers.
” The flowers of Yorkshire are like the women of Yorkshire; every stage of their growth is more beautiful than the last.
But the last phase is always the most glorious…. and then very quickly they all turn to seed!
Which makes it ironic that my favorite flower isn’t even indigenous to the British Isles.
I don’t think anything on this planet that more trumpets life than the sunflower. For me, it’s because of the reason
behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun.
During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky.
A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever the light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it.
And that’s such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life.”
