” Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary…”
These words are the beginning of the of the famous poem by Edgar Alan Poe “The Raven”. It is a classic work of gothic poetry which tells the story of lost love, depression and a man’s descent into darkness and despair.
This is the inspiration behind this painting “Quoth the Raven…Nevermore”. Poe has always been a favorite of mine, not just because he is a distant relative, but because his writings are so moody and visual, and being able to express that as an artist is always very attractive.
The raven has often been thought of as villain and an omen of death and darkness, but, in actuality, this bird has been a popular in many cultures, like the Native Americans, Norse, Celts and Greeks, as a symbol of rebirth, reflection, recovery and healing. Seeing a raven signifies moving through the transitions in life by casting a light on the darkness.
