What do you remember most about your grandmother? Maybe it is the smell of her favorite perfume? Or maybe it’s a favorite gift she gave you for Christmas? Or maybe it’s a special recipe that only she can make? Whether your grandmother is still in your life or, like me, she has passed away, grandmother’s leave a lasting impact on all our lives.  Their impact is more than just a hug or a gift they are a connection to some of the best times of our lives.

That is the goal I had in creating the collection called “Grandma’s Kitchen”. This is a series that is a sentimental walk down memory lane to remember Grandma. “Grandma’s Kitchen” is a 8″ x 10″ ceramic tile, hand-painted in acrylics and sealed with epoxy resin. The background is in dark browns and grays to symbolize the memories of a time gone by. The pieces in the painting – the flour bag, the flour sifter, the measuring cup, the eggs and the towel are all taken from a time when meals were made from scratch and families ate their meals together. Grandmothers showed their love with food and used recipes that were handed down through the family.

Each of my tiles are primed with 2-3 coats of gesso, painted in acrylics and is finished with epoxy resin, making it a very versatile piece that is heat, cold and moisture resistant.

This piece is backed by a thick layer of black felt. This gives the tile extra stability but care is needed because it is ceramic tile and capable of breaking.

To clean, wipe with a damp cloth.

Please Note: I try to photograph in the best lighting possible, so colors can vary based on the electronic devise. Some photos are taken without resin applied because lighting can sometimes cause a glare to the tiles. But, rest assured, your finished piece will have a beautiful, shiny resin finish.
